Marketing have split everyone in society into different classes and groups, this method of classification and stereotyping makes it much easier for advertising and targeting audiences for movies.
As in regular marketing this classification is useful for deciding where to focus certain advertisement. Generally people in the upper group's A, B and C's are more likely to buy luxury items where as the lower group are more focused on essentials.
How this translates to every day life- in the very stereotypical world of advertisement (and to be fair to them they have to otherwise they wont be able to target any particular audiences), they will have a particular product that they need to sell and so they will use this method of classification to better target their audience to ensure the most efficient use of their money is spent targeting the right areas.
An example of this would be an expensive holiday cruse that costs in the 1000's. They look at the classes and assume people in the lower groups (who generally focus on buying essential and less on extravagant luxury items) wont be interested in this so advertisement look towards media forms assumed to be read by the people in the upper classes who are more likely to take an interest.
How this relates to a movie audience is if there was a new movie which was an adaptation of War and Peace they would assume people who could afford the time, money and educational background to read and appreciate the book would be of a higher class than not. (This is a harsh stereotype but in a black and white viewpoint it maybe be argued as true, disregarding rare cases.) So they would focus their advertisement to those people and on such forms like The Guardian, ect'; any product people of a high class would be assumed to purchase.
